How to use the Christmas budget planner

  1. 1Set your category budgets

Type a dollar limit for Gifts, Decorations, Food and Drinks, and Travel. The total budget and remaining amount update instantly.

  2. 2Add each gift

Enter the recipient, the gift, its category, and what you plan to spend. Leave “Actual” blank until you buy it — then fill in the real price.

  3. 3Watch the progress bars

Each category shows planned versus spent against its budget. Green means on track; red means you have gone over.

  4. 4Stay under budget

The remaining-budget summary shows exactly what is left across the whole holiday. Print your list before you head to the stores.

Why planners love this tool

Free — not a paid spreadsheet

The top results for holiday budgeting are paid Etsy spreadsheets. This planner does the same job in your browser, interactively, for nothing.

Planned vs actual tracking

Every gift carries both numbers, so you can see where reality drifted from the plan — the real reason budgets blow up in December.

Live category progress bars

Gifts, decorations, food, and travel each get their own bar. Over-budget categories turn red the moment spending crosses the line.

Autosaves as you go

Your list is stored in your browser automatically. Close the tab, come back next week — everything is still there.

Print-ready gift list

One click prints a clean, ink-friendly version of your list to take shopping or share with family.

Made for US shoppers

Everything is in US dollars, with American English throughout. No currency conversions, no metric confusion.

Christmas budget FAQs

Is my gift list saved anywhere online?
No. Everything is stored in your browser’s local storage on your own device. We never see your list, your recipients, or your spending — and neither does anyone else.
What is the difference between Planned and Actual?
Planned is what you intend to spend on a gift; Actual is what you really paid once you buy it. Leave Actual blank for gifts you have not bought yet. The progress bars and totals use Actual for “spent” and Planned for “committed,” so you can see both sides of your budget.
What happens if I go over budget in a category?
The category card and its progress bar turn red, and the remaining total shrinks — or goes negative if you overspend overall. The numbers stay honest so you can decide where to cut back.
Can I use this for holidays other than Christmas?
Absolutely. The categories are generic — Gifts, Decorations, Food and Drinks, Travel — so it works for Hanukkah, birthdays, weddings, or any big spending event.
Will my list still be here if I close the tab?
Yes, on the same browser and device. Your list autosaves after every change. It will not sync to your phone or another computer, though — each browser keeps its own copy.
Can I print or share my list?
Yes — the Print button produces a clean, ink-friendly version of your gift list. For sharing, print to PDF and send the file to family.
How much should I budget for Christmas gifts?
A common US guideline is about 1% of annual income for total holiday spending, or a fixed per-person gift amount you choose up front. The planner helps either way: set per-person targets as Planned amounts and watch the category totals keep you honest.
