Built for Thanksgiving and Christmas drives: compare flying versus driving, and see whether the SUV or the sedan should make the trip.

Road trip cost FAQs

How is road trip fuel cost calculated?
Fuel cost equals total miles divided by your vehicle's MPG, multiplied by the gas price per gallon. For example, 1,200 miles at 28 MPG uses about 42.9 gallons; at $3.90 per gallon that is roughly $167 in fuel.
Does this include tolls and hotel costs?
Yes. Enter your estimated toll total, hotel nights, and nightly rate, and they are added to the fuel cost along with your food budget for a complete trip total.
How do I estimate tolls if I don't know them?
Check your route on a toll calculator or map app before you leave. As a rough rule, interstate-heavy routes in the Northeast run higher — $20 to $60 for a long drive — while most Southern and Western routes have few or no tolls.
What if my car lists fuel economy in L/100km?
Switch the efficiency unit to L/100km and type the number from your dashboard or owner's manual. The calculator converts it to MPG behind the scenes and still shows fuel in gallons and liters.
Is it cheaper to drive or fly for a holiday trip?
Run your numbers here first, then compare with airfare plus a rental car at your destination. As a rule of thumb, driving usually wins for trips under 600 miles, especially with two or more travelers splitting costs.
Does the calculator handle round trips?
Yes — tick the round trip box and the distance, fuel, and toll math all double automatically. Hotel and food stay tied to your trip days and nights.
Are my trip details stored anywhere?
No. All calculations happen locally in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.
