Fuel cost FAQs

How do you calculate fuel cost?
Divide the trip distance by your vehicle's fuel efficiency to get gallons used, then multiply by the gas price. Example: 120 miles at 28 MPG uses 4.29 gallons; at $3.90 per gallon that costs about $16.71.
What is a good cost per mile for fuel?
At 28 MPG and $3.90 per gallon, fuel costs about $0.14 per mile. Efficient hybrids can dip under $0.10 per mile, while full-size trucks often exceed $0.20 per mile.
How can I find my car's MPG?
Check the EPA sticker on a new car, your owner's manual, or fueleconomy.gov. Many cars also show average MPG on the dashboard trip computer — reset it after a fill-up for your real number.
Does this work with liters and kilometers?
Yes. Switch distance to km, efficiency to L/100km or km/L, and price to dollars per liter. Results always show gallons too, since US drivers think in gallons.
How is monthly commute cost figured?
Your daily round-trip distance is converted to fuel used, multiplied by the gas price, then multiplied by 22 workdays — the standard US working month.
Why does my actual cost differ from the estimate?
City driving, idling, AC use, and aggressive acceleration all lower real-world MPG below the dashboard average. If your numbers run high, try lowering the MPG input by 10 to 15 percent.
Is my data saved anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is transmitted or stored.
