Frequently asked questions

How accurate are these substitutions?
They follow widely tested standard baking ratios used by professional recipe developers. Results are rounded to the nearest quarter teaspoon, which is the practical limit of kitchen measuring.
Can I use an egg substitute in custards or meringues?
No. Flax eggs, banana, and applesauce work in muffins, pancakes, quick breads, and cakes, but they cannot replace eggs in custards, meringues, or recipes where egg is the star.
Why does the honey-for-sugar swap lower the oven temperature?
Honey browns faster than granulated sugar. Reducing the temperature by 25°F and cutting other liquids by a quarter cup keeps cakes and cookies from over-browning.
Are the swaps vegan or dairy-free?
Many are. Flax eggs, oat milk, and coconut oil are vegan; yogurt and Greek yogurt swaps are not. Each option's note tells you what you are working with.
What do the metric measurements mean?
Milliliters (ml) measure volume and grams (g) measure weight for dry ingredients. Grams are shown where they genuinely help — like flour and sugar — using standard US cup weights.
Can I scale up for a double batch?
Yes. Just enter the doubled amount — the calculator scales every substitute to match, which is handy for big Thanksgiving batches.
Is this free to use?
Yes, completely free with no signup. All calculations happen in your browser.
