Recipe scaling FAQs

How do I scale a recipe up or down?
Divide your target servings by the original servings to get the scale factor (for example 16 ÷ 8 = 2), then multiply every ingredient by it. This calculator does that automatically — just enter the two serving counts and your ingredient list.
Can I type fractions like 1 1/2?
Yes. The quantity box accepts whole numbers (2), decimals (1.5), simple fractions (1/2), and mixed numbers (1 1/2) — exactly how American recipes are written.
How are the scaled amounts rounded?
Every scaled quantity snaps to the nearest real kitchen fraction: 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, or 3/4. Tiny amounts below a measurable pinch are rounded up to 1/4 so you never see a useless “0”.
Does scaling work for baking?
For most baked goods, yes — scaling by servings works well. Baking is chemistry, though, so for leavening agents (baking soda, baking powder) the calculator’s rounding keeps you within safe margins. For very large batches (5x or more), experienced bakers often scale and test once.
What does the metric grams toggle do?
When enabled, ingredients measured in ounces, pounds, or grams also show their scaled weight in grams (1 oz = 28.35 g). Volume items like cups and teaspoons stay in US kitchen fractions.
Can I scale a recipe to one serving?
Absolutely. Set target servings to 1 and the tool halves, quarters, or eighths everything down — handy for single-serve cooking and meal prep.
Is my recipe data saved anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser; your ingredients and serving counts never leave your device and nothing is stored on any server.
