How to use the CSV to JSON converter

  1. 1Paste or upload your CSV

Copy rows straight from Excel or Google Sheets, or upload a .csv file from your computer. Both land in the same editor.

  2. 2Set your options

Keep the first row as headers (the usual case) or treat it as data. Turn on number detection if you want 42 as a number instead of "42".

  3. 3Convert and check

Click Convert to JSON. Quoted commas, doubled quotes, and line breaks inside quoted fields all come through exactly right.

  4. 4Copy or download

Copy the pretty JSON to your clipboard or download it as a .json file ready for your app, API, or database import.

Why developers use this converter

Real CSV parsing, not string splitting

A proper state-machine parser handles quoted fields, embedded commas, escaped double quotes, and newlines inside values — the cases naive split-on-comma tools get wrong.

Header rows become object keys

The first row becomes the keys of each JSON object, so the output drops straight into JavaScript, Python, or any API payload.

Handles messy spreadsheet exports

Excel and Google Sheets exports with quoted addresses, multi-line notes, and trailing commas convert cleanly, with empty rows skipped.

Optional number detection

By default every value stays a string (the safe choice for ZIP codes and IDs). Flip one switch to parse real numbers and booleans instead.

Pretty JSON you can read

Output is indented and human-readable at 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or tabs — no more one-line JSON walls.

File upload included

Drop in a .csv file directly instead of copy-pasting, then download the result as .json. Your data never leaves the browser.

CSV to JSON converter FAQs

How are commas inside a value handled?
Correctly. If a field is wrapped in double quotes — like "New York, NY" — the comma inside the quotes is part of the value, not a separator. The parser follows the standard CSV quoting rules, so quoted commas never split a field.
What about line breaks inside a field?
They work too. A newline inside a quoted field (common in multi-line notes or addresses) stays inside that value instead of starting a new row.
Do I need a header row?
No. If your CSV has no headers, choose "Treat as data" and the keys become column1, column2, and so on. With headers, each object is keyed by the header names.
Why do numbers come out as strings by default?
Because that is the safe default: ZIP codes like 02110, phone numbers, and IDs with leading zeros would lose data if forced into numbers. Turn on "Auto-detect numbers" only when your columns are genuinely numeric.
What if rows have different numbers of columns?
Short rows get empty-string values for the missing keys, and extra values beyond the header count are ignored. The converter also reports how many rows and columns it found.
Can I convert JSON back to CSV?
Yes — use the companion JSON to CSV Converter on this site, which runs the conversion in the opposite direction with the same privacy guarantees.
Is my CSV data private?
Completely. Parsing and conversion happen in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so sensitive exports stay on your machine.
What file size can it handle?
There is no artificial cap — conversion runs locally, so files up to tens of megabytes typically convert in seconds. Very large files may take a moment while the browser parses them.
