Frequently asked questions
What counts as a business day?
A business day is any Monday through Friday that is not a US federal holiday (when holiday skipping is turned on). Saturdays and Sundays are never business days.
Is the start date counted?
No. When you add business days, counting starts on the next day after your start date. When you count days between two dates, both the start and end dates are included if they are business days — so Monday 10/26/2026 through Friday 10/30/2026 counts as 5 business days.
What if my result lands on a weekend or holiday?
It never will. The calculator keeps stepping forward until it lands on a valid business day, skipping every weekend and (when enabled) every federal holiday in between.
Which US federal holidays are skipped?
New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. When a fixed holiday falls on a Saturday it is observed the Friday before, and when it falls on a Sunday it is observed the Monday after.
Can I count holidays as working days?
Yes — uncheck "Skip US federal holidays" and only Saturdays and Sundays will be skipped. Use this if your business, hospital, or shift schedule stays open on federal holidays.
Does it handle dates far in the future?
Yes. Federal holiday rules repeat every year, including floating holidays like Memorial Day (last Monday in May) and Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in November), so any year works.
Is this the same as "working days"?
Yes. In the US, "business days" and "working days" mean the same thing: weekdays excluding federal holidays. Some employers also close on extra days (like the day after Thanksgiving) — those are not federal holidays and are not skipped here.
