How do US, UK, and EU clothing sizes relate to each other?
For men’s tops, US and UK letter sizes are the same (a US Medium is a UK Medium), while EU uses numbers roughly 10 higher per step — a US M is EU 48/50. For women’s dresses, a US 8 equals a UK 12 and an EU 38. For men’s trousers, EU waist sizes are the inch waist plus 16, so a US 32 waist is an EU 48.
Are Japanese clothing sizes smaller than US sizes?
Japanese letter sizes (S, M, L) run about one size smaller than US equivalents in practice, and Japanese numeric sizes use their own scale — for example, a women’s US 8 converts to a JP 11. Always check the measurement columns rather than the letter alone when buying Japanese brands.
Why does the same size fit differently across brands?
Vanity sizing and brand-specific cuts mean a “Medium” at one retailer can measure like a “Large” at another. The conversion chart gives you the standard size, but the measurement columns are the real answer — compare your chest, waist, and hip numbers to the chart before ordering.
How do I measure my chest, waist, and hips correctly?
Chest: tape around the fullest part of your chest, arms relaxed. Waist: around your natural waistline (the narrowest point, usually near the navel), not where your pants sit. Hips: around the fullest part of your hips with feet together. Keep the tape snug but not tight, and measure in inches.
Should I size up or down if I am between sizes?
For structured garments (blazers, dress shirts, fitted dresses), size down for a cleaner fit unless you prefer room. For casual wear, knit tops, and anything you will layer, size up. Use the fit preference selector above and it will nudge the recommendation for you.
