Features

Frame-accurate trimming

Scrub to the exact tenth of a second where your clip starts, and set a duration up to 5 seconds — perfect for reaction GIFs.

Frame rate control

Pick 5 FPS for the smallest file, 8 FPS for a balanced result, or 10 FPS for the smoothest motion.

Three output sizes

Export at 160, 240, or 320 pixels wide. Smaller widths load faster in chats, comments, and forum posts.

Meme-style captions

Add bold top and bottom captions in the classic meme format — they are burned into every frame of the GIF.

Hand-built GIF encoder

Every frame is quantized to a 256-color palette and compressed with a real LZW encoder written for this tool — no libraries, no server round-trip.

Private by design

Because everything runs locally in your browser, your videos never touch our servers. There is nothing to leak.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Video to GIF Maker really free?
Yes. There are no accounts, no credits, and no watermarks. You can convert as many clips as you want, and the GIFs you download are yours to use anywhere.
Why are GIFs limited to 5 seconds?
GIF is an old format with no modern video compression — every frame is a full picture. A 5-second clip at 10 FPS is already 50 frames, which can easily be several megabytes. The cap keeps your GIFs fast to build and small enough to actually share in chats and on social media.
What frame rate should I choose?
For most reaction GIFs, 8 FPS is the sweet spot between smoothness and file size. Use 5 FPS when you need the tiniest file (for example, a forum avatar with a size limit), and 10 FPS when the motion matters — sports clips, dances, or fast action.
Why does my GIF look a little grainy or banded?
GIFs can only use 256 colors per file, while your video has millions. This tool maps every pixel to the closest of 216 evenly spaced colors, so smooth gradients (like skies) can show slight banding. Smaller widths and simpler, high-contrast clips convert the cleanest.
Does my video get uploaded anywhere?
No. The entire conversion — reading your video, capturing frames, quantizing colors, and encoding the GIF — happens inside your browser with JavaScript. Your file never leaves your device.
Will the GIF loop forever?
Yes. Every GIF this tool makes includes the standard loop extension, so it plays on repeat in browsers, chat apps, and social feeds.
Which video formats can I upload?
Anything your browser can play: MP4 (H.264) works everywhere, and WebM and MOV work in most modern browsers. If a file will not load, re-export it as MP4 and try again.
Can I use the GIFs commercially?
The GIFs themselves are free of any claim from us — but make sure you have the rights to the source video first. Do not turn someone else’s copyrighted footage into GIFs for commercial use without permission.
