About these rates: the dropdown uses each state’s base state sales tax rate for 2026 (no local, city, or county add-ons). Your actual checkout total may be higher because most cities and counties add their own tax — for example, Los Angeles, CA combines the 7.25% state rate with local taxes for a total above 9.5%. Five states have no statewide sales tax at all: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Rates change over time; confirm with your state’s Department of Revenue for official figures.

How to use the Sales Tax Calculator

  1. 1Pick a calculation mode

Forward mode adds tax to a pre-tax price. Reverse mode backs the tax out of a total that already includes tax — handy for splitting receipts or checking a quote.

  2. 2Select your state

Choose from all 50 states plus DC. The 2026 base rate is applied automatically and shown next to the dropdown.

  3. 3Enter the amount

Type the price (or the total, in reverse mode). Results update live: pre-tax price, tax amount, and total — no button to press.

Frequently asked questions

Is this sales tax calculator free?
Yes. It is completely free, requires no signup, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent to any server.
Which states have no sales tax in 2026?
Five states levy no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Note that some Alaska municipalities charge their own local sales tax.
Which states have the highest base sales tax rates?
California has the highest state-level base rate at 7.25%. Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Indiana follow at 7.00% to 6.50%. But the total you actually pay is often higher because cities and counties add local taxes — Louisiana has the highest combined average at over 10%.
Does the calculator include local city and county taxes?
No — the dropdown uses each state’s base state rate only. Local add-ons vary by address (for example, New York City adds 4.875% on top of the 4.00% state rate). For an exact checkout total, use the combined rate for your ZIP code.
How does reverse mode work?
Reverse mode takes a total that already includes tax and works backward: pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate), then tax = total − pre-tax price. It is useful for splitting a restaurant check, verifying a quote, or doing your own bookkeeping.
How is the tax rounded?
Tax is rounded half-up to the nearest cent (standard US retail practice), then added to the price. In reverse mode, the pre-tax price is the rounded value and the tax is the difference, so the three figures always add up exactly.
Are groceries taxed?
It depends on the state. Most states exempt groceries or tax them at a lower rate, while states like Alabama and Mississippi tax groceries at the full rate. This calculator applies the general base rate, so grocery totals may differ.
How current are the rates?
The rates reflect 2026 base state sales tax rates as reported by the Tax Foundation’s midyear update. Legislatures change rates periodically, so verify with your state’s Department of Revenue for official numbers.
