Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 hashes from text or files — fully local.

⚠️
Security note: MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes — collisions can be manufactured, so never use them for passwords or signatures. They are fine for checksums. Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 when security matters.
🔒
100% local. Hashing runs entirely in your browser with Web Crypto — files are read with FileReader on your device and never uploaded anywhere.
No libraries loaded — SHA via the browser’s built-in SubtleCrypto, MD5 via compact pure JavaScript.
100% private
Text and files never leave your device. No server sees your data — ever.
No signup
Use it instantly. No accounts, no email, no waiting.
Free forever
Unlimited hashing, no limits on text length or file size, no locked features.
How to use the hash generator
1
Type text or pick a file
Paste any text into the box and all four hashes update live — or choose a file to hash its exact contents.
2
Read all four digests at once
MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 are computed simultaneously, so you can compare algorithms side by side.
3
Copy and verify
Use the Copy button next to any hash, then compare it against a published checksum to confirm a download is intact.
Features
Four algorithms, one run
MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 are all computed at the same time — no re-running the tool for each one.
Hash text or files
Paste text for live hashing, or choose any file and its raw bytes are hashed locally with FileReader.
Real Web Crypto for SHA
SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 use the browser’s built-in SubtleCrypto engine; MD5 uses a compact pure-JS implementation.
One-click copy per hash
Each digest has its own copy button, formatted as lowercase hex — ready to paste into a checksum comparison.
Honest security guidance
The tool tells you plainly that MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checksums but broken for security, and points you to SHA-256/512.
Instant, no submit button
Hashes recalculate as you type. There is nothing to submit and nothing to wait for.
Frequently asked questions
What is a hash, and what is a checksum?
A hash (checksum) is a fixed-length fingerprint computed from your data. Change even one character and the hash changes completely, which makes hashes perfect for verifying file integrity.
What is the difference between MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512?
They differ in digest length and security: MD5 (128-bit) and SHA-1 (160-bit) are fast but cryptographically broken; SHA-256 (256-bit) and SHA-512 (512-bit) are secure and recommended for security-sensitive uses.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. When you choose a file, your browser reads it locally with FileReader and hashes the bytes on your device. Nothing is transmitted anywhere.
Can two different inputs produce the same hash?
In theory, yes — that’s called a collision. In practice, with SHA-256 or SHA-512 it is computationally infeasible. MD5 and SHA-1 have known practical collision attacks, which is why they should not be used for security.
How do I verify a download with a hash?
Hash the downloaded file with this tool, then compare the result with the checksum published by the software author. If they match exactly, the file is intact.
Is hashing the same as encryption?
No. Encryption is reversible with a key; hashing is one-way. You cannot recover the original data from a hash.
Why is there no submit button?
The tool recalculates all four hashes live as you type or when you pick a file, so there is nothing to submit.
