🍂 October tip: fall is the perfect time to mulch — a fresh 3-inch layer insulates roots against winter freeze-thaw cycles, smothers late-season weeds, and breaks down over winter so your beds wake up rich in spring. Spread now, before the first hard freeze.

How to use the mulch calculator

  1. 1Measure your bed area

Enter the length × width in square feet, or switch to acres for large areas. Measure each bed separately and add them up.

  2. 2Pick a depth

Use the 2, 3, or 4 inch presets, or slide to any depth from 1 to 6 inches. Three inches is the standard recommendation for most beds.

  3. 3Choose mulch and price

Pick your mulch type — it fills in the typical 2026 US price per cubic yard — or type your local supplier’s price.

  4. 4Get your numbers

See cubic yards, bag counts, pickup truckloads, and estimated cost instantly. Screenshot it before heading to the supplier.

Why gardeners use this calculator

Exact cubic yards

Uses the industry formula — area × depth ÷ 27 — so you order exactly what you need, not a yard too many.

Bag counts that match the store

Converts your total into 2 cu ft and 3 cu ft bag counts (rounded up), the sizes most home-improvement stores sell.

Real 2026 US pricing

Mulch-type presets carry realistic per-yard prices, and you can type your supplier’s exact quote for a true total.

Truckload planning

Translates cubic yards into full-size pickup loads (~2 yd³ each), so you know whether one trip or three will do it.

Acres for big properties

Switch the area unit to acres for large landscapes — it converts at the true 43,560 sq ft per acre automatically.

Works on your phone

Bring the page to the garden center and re-run the numbers on the spot — fully responsive and touch-friendly.

Mulch calculator FAQs

How much mulch do I need for 500 square feet?
At the standard 3-inch depth, 500 sq ft needs about 4.63 cubic yards — roughly 63 bags of the 2 cu ft size. Type your numbers into the calculator above for your exact area and depth.
How deep should I spread mulch?
Most experts recommend 2–3 inches for flower and vegetable beds and 3–4 inches around trees and shrubs. Going deeper than 4 inches can trap moisture against stems and invite rot, so use the slider to stay in the safe range.
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, so it holds 13.5 bags of the 2 cu ft size or 9 bags of the 3 cu ft size. The calculator rounds every bag count up so you never come up short.
How much does a cubic yard of mulch cost in 2026?
Bulk mulch in the US typically runs $35–$65 per cubic yard, with shredded hardwood near the middle (~$45), pine bark nuggets and cedar higher, and dyed mulch in between. Delivery fees are usually extra — the calculator shows the material cost so you can compare quotes.
Is fall (October) a good time to mulch?
Yes — it is one of the best times. A fresh 3-inch layer applied in October insulates roots from winter freeze-thaw cycles, suppresses cool-season weeds, and partially decomposes over winter, feeding the soil by spring.
Is bulk mulch cheaper than bags?
Almost always. A cubic yard of bulk mulch is often 30–50% cheaper than the equivalent bags from a home-improvement store. Bags win only for small jobs under ~1 cubic yard where delivery fees would wipe out the savings.
How do I convert acres to square feet for mulch?
One acre equals 43,560 square feet. Switch the area unit to “Acres” in the calculator and it converts for you — one full acre at 3 inches deep needs about 403 cubic yards, so most homeowners mulch only part of it.
