YAML to JSON Converter — Turn YAML Into Clean JSON Instantly

Paste your YAML, or upload a .yaml file, and get properly formatted JSON in one click — ready to copy into your code, config, or API test. No signup, and your text never leaves your browser.

Convert YAML to JSON

This converter handles common YAML: nested maps by indentation, lists, quoted strings, numbers, booleans, null, comments, and basic multi-line block scalars. Advanced YAML features are listed below the converter — if your input uses one, you will get a clear error naming the line instead of wrong JSON.

What this converter supports: nested maps by indentation, lists (including lists of maps), scalars (strings, integers, decimals, true and false, null), single-quoted and double-quoted strings, comments starting with #, simple flow collections like [a, b] and {a: 1}, and basic literal and folded block scalars. Not supported: anchors and aliases, tags, multi-document files, complex keys, tabs for indentation, and multi-line quoted strings. If your input uses one of these, the error box names the exact line so you can fix it or use a full YAML library for that file.

How to use the YAML to JSON converter

  1. 1Paste or upload your YAML

Paste into the left box, or upload a .yaml or .yml file. The sample already loaded shows nested maps and a list of maps.

  2. 2Click Convert to JSON

The converter parses your indentation, lists, and scalars, then pretty-prints the result with two-space indentation.

  3. 3Check for errors by line

If something is unsupported or malformed, the red box names the exact line and the problem — fix that line and convert again.

  4. 4Copy or download the JSON

Copy the output to your clipboard, or download it as a .json file for your project.

Why developers use this converter

Nested maps that just work

Indentation-based nesting is parsed correctly, so config files with several levels come out as properly nested JSON objects.

Lists of maps, handled

The trickiest common pattern — a list where each item is a map, like a team roster — converts cleanly instead of flattening.

Real scalar types

Numbers stay numbers, true and false stay booleans, and null stays null — no everything-becomes-a-string surprises.

Comments ignored safely

Lines starting with # and trailing comments after a space are stripped before parsing, so documented configs convert without edits.

Honest errors, not silent guesses

Unsupported constructs and malformed lines produce a clear, line-numbered error instead of quietly wrong JSON.

Private by design

Config files often hold internal details. Everything runs locally in your browser, so nothing you paste ever leaves your device.

YAML to JSON converter FAQs

How do I convert YAML to JSON?
Paste your YAML into the left box and click Convert to JSON. The right box shows pretty-printed JSON with two-space indentation, ready to copy or download.
Does this converter support nested YAML?
Yes. Nested maps by indentation and lists of maps are fully supported — for example, an address block under a company, or a team list where each person has a name and role.
What happens to YAML comments?
Comments are removed before parsing. A line starting with # is skipped, and a # that follows a space after a value is treated as a comment too. A # inside a quoted string is kept as part of the string.
Are numbers, booleans, and null preserved?
Yes. Unquoted numbers become JSON numbers, true and false become JSON booleans, and null, Null, NULL, and ~ become JSON null. Quoted values always stay strings, even if they look like numbers.
What YAML is not supported here?
Anchors and aliases, tags, multi-document files, complex keys, tab indentation, and multi-line quoted strings are not supported. The converter reports the exact line when it meets one, so you know what to change.
Can I upload a .yaml file instead of pasting?
Yes. Use the file upload above the buttons and pick a .yaml, .yml, or .txt file. Its contents load into the input box and convert automatically.
Is my YAML data private?
Yes. Conversion happens entirely in your browser with no server involved. Your YAML is never uploaded or stored.
