Make an image lighter without guessing
A practical resize → compress → review process.

Start with the destination
Check the required width and height before editing. A small web card rarely needs the original camera resolution. Keep a copy of your original file so you can return to it.
Resize before changing quality
Open Image Resizer and choose the required dimensions with the aspect ratio preserved. Download that image, then upload it to Image Compressor. Reducing pixel count first avoids spending quality on pixels nobody sees.
Choose a suitable format
For a photograph, try JPEG or WebP. For transparency, check that the chosen output supports it. The right format depends on the destination; a conversion can also increase the file size.
Compare the actual output
Adjust quality, export and open the downloaded file. Compare fine text, faces and edges at the size visitors will see. Check the actual file size rather than assuming a lower quality slider guarantees a particular number of kilobytes.
A repeatable example
For a 1600-pixel photograph displayed at 800 pixels wide, export an 800-pixel version first. Try a moderate compression setting, then compare it against the original. Keep the version that meets your destination’s size limit with acceptable detail.
