Final grade questions, answered

How is the needed final-exam score calculated?
The formula is: needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight × 100. In plain terms: your target grade minus the points your current grade already locks in, divided by how much of your grade the final controls.
What does “mathematically impossible” mean?
If the calculator says you need more than 100% on the final — for example 112% — then the target can’t be reached even with a perfect exam. You’ll need to lower your target grade.
Where do I find my final exam’s weight?
Check your class syllabus under “grading” or “assessment breakdown.” Common weights are 20%, 25%, or 30%. Your school’s grade portal sometimes lists it too.
What if I already secured my target grade?
If the needed score comes out at 0% or below, your target is already locked in — even skipping the final couldn’t drop you below it. (Still check your school’s exam policy, of course.)
Does this work for midterms and unit tests?
Yes. The math works for any single exam with a known weight — just enter that exam’s weight percentage instead.
Is the letter-grade chart accurate for my school?
The chart shows the standard US 90/80/70/60 scale used by most schools. Some classes use plus/minus grades or a custom scale — check your syllabus for the exact cutoffs.
Are my grades sent anywhere?
No. The calculation happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or tracked.
