Frequently asked questions

How much wrapping paper do I need per gift box?
The paper needed equals the surface area of the box — 2 × (L×W + L×H + W×H) — plus about 10% extra for overlap and cutting. For example, a 10″ × 8″ × 4″ box needs 304 sq in (2.11 sq ft), plus 10% waste ≈ 2.32 sq ft.
What size is a standard roll of wrapping paper?
Most US retailers sell “standard” rolls covering about 25 sq ft (typically 30″ × 10 ft) and “jumbo” rolls covering about 50 sq ft. This calculator supports both sizes.
Why does the calculator add 10% waste?
You lose paper to diagonal cuts, tucking flaps, overlapping seams, and trimming. A 10% allowance is the industry-standard rule of thumb that prevents running short mid-wrap.
Should I round up rolls?
Yes — you can’t buy a fraction of a roll. The calculator always rounds up to whole rolls, and leftover paper keeps perfectly for the next occasion.
Does it work for oddly shaped or cylindrical gifts?
It’s built for boxes and rectangular gifts. For cylinders or irregular shapes, enter the smallest box that would contain the item as a close estimate.
How do I measure a gift box?
Measure the longest side as length, the shorter flat side as width, and the vertical side as height — all in inches. If the gift is already boxed, measure the shipping box.
