Typing test FAQs

What is a good WPM?
Around 40 WPM is average. 60+ is strong, 80+ is professional, and 100+ puts you in the top few percent of typists. Your level label on the results screen uses these ranges.
How is WPM calculated?
We count every 5 correct characters as one word, then divide by the minutes elapsed. This is the standard “net WPM” formula used by most typing tests.
Do mistakes hurt my score?
Yes — wrong characters reduce your correct-character count, which lowers both WPM and accuracy. Backspace is allowed to fix a slip.
Does the timer start when I press a key?
Exactly. The clock starts on your first keystroke, so there is no penalty for reading the paragraph first.
Can I retake the test?
As many times as you want. Hit Restart for the same text or New Text for a fresh paragraph.
Is my typing data private?
Yes. Everything happens in your browser. No keystrokes, scores, or personal data are ever sent to a server.
