Why this bill splitter beats mental math

Tax as % or $

Receipt already lists the tax? Enter the dollar amount directly. Otherwise type your state’s sales tax percent and let it compute.

True uneven splits

Itemize each person’s pre-tax share and tax plus tip are divided proportionally — the salad-and-water friend pays fairly.

Round-up option

Round every share up to the nearest dollar to cover the valet or just keep change simple; the overage is shown honestly.

Visible math

Every result shows the full breakdown line — no black box, no “trust me” — so the whole table agrees.

Tip quick-picks

Bill splitting questions, answered

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
US etiquette is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, and many restaurants print a suggested-tip guide based on it. This calculator computes the tip on subtotal plus tax — the figure most bill-split apps use and the one that avoids underpaying when tax is rolled into menu prices. For a $120 subtotal with 8% tax and a 20% tip: ($120.00 + $9.60 tax) × 20% = $25.92 tip, $155.52 total.
How do uneven splits work?
List each person’s pre-tax share — what they actually ordered. Tax and tip are then divided in the same proportions as those shares. If Alex’s items total $40 of a $120 subtotal, Alex covers one-third of the tax and tip too. The shares always add up to the full total.
What is the round-up option for?
It rounds each person’s share up to the next whole dollar — handy when cash is changing hands or you want to leave a little extra. The calculator shows the rounded shares, the overage, and what the overage covers.
Does this handle happy-hour discounts or coupons?
Yes — just enter the discounted subtotal from the receipt. Standard etiquette is to tip on the pre-discount amount, so consider bumping the tip percent a little when a coupon shrank the bill.
How is this different from a tip calculator?
A tip calculator only computes the gratuity. This tool goes further: it combines subtotal, tax and tip into a grand total, then splits it evenly or itemized, with rounding options and a share-by-share breakdown.
Is my bill data stored anywhere?
No. All math runs locally in your browser with JavaScript — nothing is sent to a server, saved, or tracked.
